This simple and comforting apple pie recipe is a family favorite, perfect for enjoying throughout the fall season.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 25 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pie dough rounds, store-bought or homemade, at room temp
  • 8 Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • ½ cup salted butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup + 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F, center rack.
  2. Melt butter in a pot over medium heat. Stir in flour, sugar, brown sugar, water, 1 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then simmer until sugars dissolve (3-5 mins). Remove from heat, add apples, and toss.
  3. Roll out pie dough on a floured surface. Place one round into a pie plate. Trim edges.
  4. Spoon apple filling into the crust, forming a slight mound. Top with the second pie dough round. Seal edges with a fork or fingers.
  5. Mix remaining sugar and cinnamon. Brush beaten egg on top of the pie, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Cut four 2-inch slits into the crust.
  6. Bake on a sheet for 15 mins. Reduce temp to 350°F and bake until golden brown and bubbling (about 45 mins), tenting with foil if needed.
  7. Cool for at least 2 hours on a rack before serving. Rewarm if desired.
